Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 from Long Beach CA. DuVernay was able to explore her creative and artistic side in her early years, thanks to Aunt Denise. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to explore art and literature as well as the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay became enamored with the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt introduced her to DuVernay. DuVernay saw how art was an effective way to spread social activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother, with a conscience for social issues, and pushed DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay lived in Compton throughout her youth, however she spent every summer in the company of her father's extended family located in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the civil rights march of the past along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma be the inspiration for her later the film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. Upon graduation, DuVernay studied at the University of California Los Angeles and earned degrees both in English and African American study. DuVernay started producing broadcast journalism at the age of an elementary school student. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to sit at the house of one of the members of the jury and examine their junk. Her work left her dissatisfied in journalism, so she decided to shift her focus towards the field of publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior publicity assistant for a film studio that was small following her graduation from college. In 1999, she established her own company of public relations called The DuVernay Agency. Her agency launched numerous promotions and lifestyle channels that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
